Tire Guide

Below you will find a chart of tires (tyres) that have been tried on various Segway models.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it should give readers a place to start looking. There is a different amount of tire-to-fender clearance on each model of Segway, i180 machines seem to have the least amount, were i170s appear to have the most. The majority of these tires will require tubes, stock generation 1 tires were tubeless.

XT/X2 Wheel Information

by Jim McClain from SegwayChat

There are hundreds of wheels with the same bolt pattern (4/156). The offset or backspacing is the critical feature, if you are looking for a match to the stock Segway.

The standard width of a Segway X series wheel is 5". This is determined by measuring the space from bead set to bead set point (the rim has a sidewall protective edge that sticks out another ΒΌ" on each side - do not measure that part). Middle of the wheel is 2.5" Offset is the amount of distance the mounting surface of the wheel is away from the middle of the rim. If the mounting surface is toward the outside of the vehicle, it is referred to as negative offset. On the stock X series wheel, the offset is positive - toward the centerline of the Segway, or closer to the Seg.

Backspacing is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel to the inner rim edge (bead set point). Some wheel manufacturers and dealers refer to "spacing" rather than backspacing. This is the distance from the the mounting surface to the inner rim stated first and the distance from the mounting surface to the outer rim second, commonly displayed as n.+n. (where n. is the measurement number in metric or US units).

  • The Segway XT/X2 rim is a 10x5" wheel.
  • Its bolt pattern is 4/156 (number of bolt holes and the space, in millimeters, from the centers of bolt 1 and 3 or 2 and 4).
  • The offset is .50" or 12.7mm
  • The backspacing is 2" or 50.8mm
  • The spacing is 2+3 or 50.8+76.2mm
