A Red Wrench for Moisture
The seals on the Segway are very good, but there is a chance that a heavy downpour or vigorous washing will put water into the base of the unit. The Segway is designed to red wrench when it detects water in the base.
Tools
- 3mm Long allen wrench
- #30 Torx driver
- #27 Torx Driver
- 5mm Hex (allen) wrench
Details
- If you have the cargo kit installed, remove it
- Remove the control shaft
- Loosen the height adjustment collar
- Fully lower the upper half of the control shaft into the lower half
- Gently tighten the height adjustment collar
- If you have a quick release, release it, if not using a 5mm hex wrench loosen the control shaft bolt
- Lift the control shaft from the base, you may have to twist the handle bars a bit to release the base
- Disconnect the two electrical connectors
- Place the control shaft out of the way
- Look inside the the control shaft base (CSB) if you see no standing water, chances are you aren't suffering from a water issue.
- You can stop at this point if you see water and just leave the segway our in the sun for a few days to dry. If however you are comfortable with tools and don't mind possibly messing up your segway continue on with a more complete disassembly
- Remove the batteries:
- Set the Segway on its side (put one of the wheels on the floor)
- Using the long 3mm allen wrench remove the 4 cap screws that hold the rear battery in place. note: the screws are not "captured" by the batteries, once loosened, they can (will) fall out on the floor.
- Repeat for the front battery
Gaining access to the base Being careful not to tear the front right strap where it goes around the kickstand, remove the mat covering the base by pulling the the loops out of each fender and pulling upward. note: Segway XT models do not have the loops, just pull the mat up.
Remove the CSB There are three #30 torx cap screws holding the base in place, two at the front of the base and one that will be probably be hiding under your power cover You might need to gently tap the cover to get it loose, but on mine just lifted it up There are two cables coming through the base cover that attach to the bottom of the CSB. Each of these cables need to be removed by pressing in on the top of the retaining clip Set the CSB aside
Remove the base cover Remove the 8 #x27 torx button screws You may need to gently pry the base up, don't force or bend it Put the cover aside. note: if you look closely at the photograph you can see water droplets on the bottom of the cover
Drying Using lint free cloths dry the top and bottom of the base cover and the CSB. DO NOT dry the circuit boards with a cloth! Leave the unit disassembled with the CSB upside down on a towel, and the platform uncovered overnight until it has had a chance to dry out.
Reassembly After everything is nice and dry reassemble and all should be well with your Segway.
