Homemade cargo bags

Why?

Let's face it, the Givi bags available from Segway are wonderful. If you have the cash they are the way to go. Water resistant, strong, lockable. But if money is an issues, these DIY cases will do.

Note: The edges on the ammo cases are much sharper then those on the Givi case USE CARE!

I only used two two screws to attach each cargo case, I should have used four.

What You'll Need

  • 8 1" screws
  • 8 Tee-nuts. I got these at Orchard Supply Hardware, these don't have any prongs on them like regular tee nuts do.
  • 8 Fender washers

  • 2 Plastic Ammo Cases. I have seen these in four different colors. Green, Brown, Orange and Camouflage. I picked orange to stand out. I can always paint them using Krylon Fusion paint.
  • Some other things that might work:
    • Small Ice chest
    • Toolbox
    • Motorcycle bags

Detailed Instructions

  • Remove the cargo plate from the bracket by loosing the eight allen screws

  • Turn the ammo case upside down and mark four holes on the bottom of the ammo case that won't interfere with the mounting brackets. I didn't want a lot of thigh slapping so I moved my bags past the outside edge. This turned out great, now the outside edge of the bag matches the outside edge of my turf tires.

  • Drill holes that are the exact size of the tee nut. My trick for this is to insert the tee nut into the drill bit case until I find the smallest hole the tee nut will fit into. In the photo you will see that 15/64th of an inch is the right size for my tee nuts

  • From inside the cargo case, insert the four tee-nuts into the holes you just drilled. You might want to put one small drop of super glue on the shank of the nut before you insert it into the hole just to insure it's going to stay put.

  • Reattach the cargo plate to the frame. You have to do this first, you won't be able to tighten down the cargo plate screws with the cases in the way.

In the last photo, you can see both the gen2 Givi bag in the background, and the gen1 Cargo bag in the foreground.

If you notice that the cargo plates seem to wiggle on the frame, you can put some foam tape on the frame before you install plates.
