How to fix an InfoKey
by Desert Seg on Segway Online
A few of you have written to me regarding damaged or "stuck" Infokeys and since one of of my Infokeys just got "stuck" I thought I would post the repair procedures.
This repair does not take any special skills, only a steady hand and the right set of Torx drivers, which can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, or your nearest Radio Shack.
Tools Needed:
- Torx Driver (TX5)
- Jeweler's Screwdrivers
- Exacto or Utility Knife
- Compressed Air (optional)
- Clear Nail Polish
Process
- Remove Infokey battery
- Remove Infokey back by removing the Torx screws. Some Infokeys may have a "filler" in the drive hole but this can easily be removed by using a cotton swab (aka Q-Tip) dabbed in nail polish remover.
- Carefully remove Infokey innards (key module) and gently blow out any dirt / dust. This can be best accomplished if you use the can of compressed air. MAKE SURE YOU MARK WHICH ONE IS THE POWER BUTTON SO THAT YOU GET THE MODULE BACK IN CORRECTLY.
- Using a small jeweler's screwdriver, gently bend the spring clips outward so that they regain some of their spring tension. The On/Off and the Mode buttons are the ones that most often need to be fixed.
- (OPTIONAL) If you have a steady hand, you should remove the clip that holds the outer button in the plastic cylinder. This will allow you to use the Exacto or Utility knife to trip the edge of the cylinder and to clean out the inside of the cylinder and the outer rim of the button.
- If you don't remove the clip / outer button, carefully use the Exacto / Utility knife to clean the edge of the plastic button cylinders. Then use the compressed air to blow out any dirt that is between the cylinders and the buttons.
- Insert the key module back into the back, being careful to insert the power module into the right position. Check each button to ensure it works properly.
- Re-insert the battery (flat side up) and attach the battery cover. Holding the unit in place power on the unit and test each button function.
- Once all buttons are tested and working, re-insert the Torx screws and tighten them to just past hand-tight. Place a very small dab of clear nail polish over each screw to ensure they don't back out.
- Take your unit out for a glide and enjoy your newly refurbished Infokey.
